April 24 Issue
Dressed
To Kill
The theme for this issue was "Steel Shadows", the fading silhouette of man, and it focused on the advancement of technology corrupting creative careers and how our fast paced environment is hurting our planet. I Usually lean towards a fashion narrative and featured an article around the critical state of water pollution the textile and fashion industry is causing.
For this issue, I was inspired by the idea of shooting in an outdoors setting for water pollution. I really wanted to go above and beyond for these pictures and spent a week tracking down all of the possible locations in oklahoma and the forecast for the upcoming weeks. I narrowed it down to the natural springs located in the Platt National Park. Not only were these springs full of crystal clear water and several waterfalls, features hard to come by in oklahoma, but they were also swimmable. I found a time that worked with the weather, the photographers schedule, and the marketing managers schedule and I drove all 3 of us two and a half hours, there and back.
Prior to the shoot, I needed to find the perfect dress. After scavenging through every thrift store in the city of Stillwater, I found the one and only perfect black tulle dress, in my size, for 75% off in a department store. I wanted it to be black and perfectly flowy, to emulate me polluting the water like an oil spill.
In the middle of March, the water was quite cold. We spent almost 2 hours at the park, climbing over slippery rocks and submerging myself in freezing water, but it was all worth it.
